On January 16^th the GSTC announced the first GSTC-RecognizedStandards which means that  "theGSTC has verified that the standard aligns with the GSTC Criteria and that anyadditional clauses do not contradict GSTC Criteria requirements."  The lowest entry level recognition and should notbe confused with the accredited or approved status. 2011 has been a good year for Responsible Tourism. In April ina spirit of Ubuntu, with cakes and ale, we celebrated ten years of ResponsibleTourism. WhenJustin Francis and Harold Goodwin launched ResponsibleTravel.com there was muchscepticism and some laughter, although that faded away some time ago. ResponsibleTravel.comhas played a major role in establishing the idea of Responsible Tourism andenabling many businesses, some new and some established, to develop, to take responsibilityand to find a market, In TheGambia the ground breaking Association of Small Scale Enterprises in Tourism(ASSET) celebrated its 10^th birthday too.

May saw the publication of Harold Goodwin’s Taking Responsibility for Tourism,the first of a series with Goodfellow, this was followed in November by thelaunch of a twice yearly journal Progressin Responsible Tourism.The first edition of which contained an article by Michael Horton on childtrafficking and orphanages in Cambodia, a practice made lucrative by the cash donatedby tourists.This article and his contribution during World Responsible Tourism Day havesparked a campaign which will run through 2012.

From the original campaign with VSO in the mid-nineties weargued that all forms of tourism can be more responsible and that is evidencedeach year in the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards and theWTM World Responsible Tourism Day programme. In theUK the Responsible Tourism Movement has been successful in engaging majorcompanies and both Thomas Cook and TUI are now reporting their progress in amore transparent way. Despite Britain entering the age of austerity, inboundand outbound tourism has faced the challenge of adversity. Tour operatorsin the UK have continued to take responsibility for making tourism moresustainable advancing the agenda and in 2011 ABTA’s work on sustainabledestinations gathered momentum.

However, the very success of Responsible Tourism has led toits use in greenwashing, a trend which needs to be challenged. There are somecredible labels. The Green Tourism Business Scheme has passed 2,300 members andABTA’s Travelife has grown in numbers and stature too, going global in 2011. HaroldGoodwin has argued that Responsible Tourism claims need to be demonstrated inways which the consumer can challenge. JeneferBobbin, who graduated this year from Leeds Met with the Masters in ResponsibleTourism Management, has successfully piloted the Responsible Tourism Reportingscheme she developed as her Professional Report and has demonstrated its valuein Nepal. Much moreneeds to be done to encourage travellers, holidaymakers and volunteers to challengetourism businesses to prove their claims. There needs to be more focus on whathas been achieved in reducing negative impacts and increasing positive ones rather than on certificates.

One of the biggest advances of the year was the launch ofthe first legally enforceable Responsible Tourism standard in SouthAfrica,pioneers of Responsible Tourism there have been major efforts to green hotelsin Durban linked to COP17 and Cape Town continues to make progress, results areexpected in 2013.Another important marker came in May when the National League for Democracy inBurma said that “Should the government and all players including investors inthis tourist enterprise take responsibility, respect ethics and preserve theecology, we would readily embrace tourism.”

1. The ICRT will be holding its annual Local Economic Development conference in London on February 1^st on Creating Shared Value through Tourism. Places are limited, take a look and if you want to come along, book now.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council announced a three stage process “to recognise and reward genuine practitioners of sustainable travel and tourism.” Businesses will be recognised, approved and accredited this complicated and will surely make it more difficult for consumers to have confidence in the range of labels, each of which will fall into one of the GSTC’s three categories. Which is the more robust?
3. The spoken history of the San
   Over a period of six years, hundreds of San people from eight language groups in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa spoke into microphones to their own people, in their mother-tongue, in their own homes, to tap into a vast source of knowledge. These conversations were translated into English and vividly illustrated with photographs and artworks of the San people, both contemporary and historic. It is a beautiful and powerful book and some of the last remaining copies are available on Amazon. Alison White, one of the authors, is an early alumni of the ICRT.
4. The LIVFund is a new non-profit organization, it has scholarships available to students and others who travel to Latin America in order to learn, intern or volunteer abroad.
